Since the introduction of the first memory foam mattresses, they have received numerous awards, been hailed as the latest and greatest, and also been the victim of many issues that have long since been overcome. For many customers, when it comes to buying a memory foam mattress, there is still a great deal of uncertainty when they come into one of our Bed’r Mattress stores in Tennessee or Georgia. Here are a few of the misconceptions and how the industry has made changes to the mattresses to meet the demands of our customers.
1. Doesn’t Memory Foam “Sleep Hot”?
One of the first questions asked by our customers when buying a mattress made from memory foam is, “Doesn’t it sleep hot?” While that may have been an issue with earlier versions, there have been many advances in technology. Today’s memory foam mattress is made using the latest in open cell technology. By removing the membranes, the foam allows for more air to flow through the mattress, helping to keep you cooler at night.
2. Isn’t a Memory Foam Mattress Expensive?
In the early days, these mattresses were very expensive and few could afford them. But as their popularity has grown, technology has advanced, and more companies have begun offering them, the prices have become far more affordable. We offer a wide selection of memory foam mattresses at the lowest possible prices every day.
3. Won’t I Feel Trapped in My Mattress?
This problem, again, dates back to the original mattresses that were made of dense foam. Because this foam was originally designed for NASA to contour to an astronaut’s body and hold them in place, it worked in much the same manner when used for a mattress. It made moving around in bed so challenging that many complained of having to “wake up” just to change positions. Today’s open larger cell structure is not so slow to respond to your body as it moves, allowing you to move easily as you sleep.
4. “Ooh, That Smell; Can’t You Smell That?”
One of the most common complaints with the earlier types of memory foam mattress was the horrible chemical smell. The smell was not only terrible, but it made it hard for many people to sleep for weeks, until at last the stench had faded enough to be tolerable. Technology to the rescue: thanks to a new production process known as “Variable Pressure Foaming,” manufacturers can now create memory foam mattresses without the need for chemical-laden blowing agents. The new mattresses have very low VOCs (volatile organic compounds), the chemicals that cause the smells.
5. My Friend Says Their Memory Foam Mattress Made Their Back Hurt
While we don’t hear this one very often, there is some truth to this story. However, it is, and at the same time, it isn’t, the mattress that’s at fault. Buying a mattress made from memory foam introduces your body to an entirely different form of support. In most instances, your body is trying to get used to having the proper support. This period of adjustment can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month or so. Talk to your Bed’r Mattress sleep expert about our 100-night sleep guarantee. If you don’t like your mattress at any point during the first 100 nights, we will exchange it for another one in our showroom.
